On Monday, September 26, 1994, Sonja Spruill Day was found dead in her home by her 11-year-old son and two school friends shortly after 3:30 p.m. when they returned from school.  Ms. Day was 33 years old and lived in an apartment at Sawmill Circle in Plymouth, Washington County.

Ms. Day’s apartment was either locked from inside or had been locked from the outside with a dead-bolt key.  Her son did not have a key. Willie Dixon Jr. was found deceased on the side of Highway 17 South on the railroad overpass near Whichards Beach Road on 06/30/1989 at approximately 3:25 a.m. Dixon had been shot twice in the back at close range. Salt had also been poured on his body.

Dixon had been walking to work at Singer Furniture in Chocowinity as he often did. He was seen in Washington getting coffee at approximately 3:00 a.m.

Calvin Bynum was found deceased in his business on the morning of 08/08/1992. Bynum had spent the night in the Seafood Shack in hopes of catching the person(s) that had been breaking into his building and drink machine outside.

The business was in disarray and showed signs of a struggle. Bynum died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head. A window air conditioner was also stolen from the business, but later recovered in a wooded area of Edward, NC.

Beth Ellen Vinson / Homicide / August 23, 1994

Investigators said Vinson left her apartment around 2:30 am on August 16th. Three hours later, her car was found abandoned just off Capital Boulevard near the Beltline with one of her shoes still in the vehicle. Seven days later, Vinson’s body was located between two industrial buildings on Wicker Drive, a short distance from where her car was found.

Continuing investigation of this homicide, determined that Ms. Vinson was in possession of four pieces of jewelry and a multi-colored cloth purse the morning of her homicide. These items have never been recovered. Descriptions are below:

A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the 2002 death of Ian Davis, 18, on Seaton Road in Parkwood.

Davis’ family added the reward to the existing Crime Stoppers reward for information in the case.

Davis was shot to death on Oct. 1, 2002 inside a townhouse at 1304 Seaton Road, Apt. 6. Several unknown people allegedly broke into the townhouse shortly before 3 a.m. and fatally shot Davis.

Crime Stoppers will pay cash for information leading to the identification and arrest of people wanted on felonious charges. All information can be given in complete confidentiality and callers are not required to identify themselves.

Stewart, 31, a registered nurse at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, was asleep with his wife Angela and their young son in their Gabriel Estates home when a man broke in and began shooting, police said. Angela, who was shot in the arm, managed to flee to a neighbor’s home with their son. Police believe Matt Stewart was fatally wounded while struggling with the gunman.

No suspects have ever been identified or any arrests made.

A customer went into the store to pay for gas and discovered the 37-year old clerk dying on the floor behind the counter just before 9 p.m. on July17, 2000. From the 911 transcript, the killer(s) had just driven off when the customer discovered her body.

There has been some discrepancy as to whether or not there was money taken from her cash drawer. Unfortunately, Colleen had not placed a videocassette into the surveillance system at the start of her shift this night.

RIP, Jeffrey Hieronymus

The remains of Jeffrey Hieronymus were found yesterday, at a construction site which is very near his former home in the Chantilly neighborhood of Charlotte, NC.

Jeffrey was reported missing by his live-in girlfriend, who stated that he got up in the middle of the night and went outside, never to return.

I am not sure of the condition in which his remains were found, only that they were located by a construction crew, and while I am glad that the wondering can stop on at least one portion of this case, my nature leaves me with questions -

How were his remains located that close to his home, but never found in the searches of the area? Were they simply out of sight somehow, or were they buried? If they had been buried, how that does that correspond with the Medical Examiner’s ruling of su...
